Employee spotlight: Scott Smith

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where did you grow up?

“I was born in Melrose, Illinois but only lived there for a short period of time. As a young boy my family came to Arizona and I can remember continually moving around the state forSSmith some years, before settling in the Phoenix area."

What is your position at Prisma?

“I guess I can be labeled as a digital print operator currently specializing in Grand Format printing. I also do the preventative maintenance on the machines and various other projects.” How long have you been at Prisma Graphic? “It has been about 9 months now, but I have worked in the printing industry for just over 33 years.”

What are some of the jobs you do here?

“I generally maintain all of our presses in the Grand Format area, I run the presses as the main operator, I fix and clean the printer heads to ensure quality, and work closely with my team to brainstorm ways to be most productive and ensure quality in our prints.”

What do you like most about Prisma Graphic?

“I really enjoy how comfortable and laid back it is, which makes it much easier to ensure quality and effectively do my job. I also like the clear communication I have with the team; it makes our projects run smooth.”

What do you look forward to most coming to work every day?

“Oddly enough I like the busyness, having numerous projects and finding a way to get them through the supply chain on time. I also like how it’s always a new project and various clients that we work with. The machinery we have here is exceptional and its great working with quality. Lastly, would be the cleanliness; our team always makes sure that our work room is clean and items are easily accessible.”

When did you first know you wanted to work in the printing industry?

“Hmm...I would have to say what really sparked it was being involved in art throughout school. I always took pleasure in creating art and some design. The print industry goes hand in hand with the art and I started working for various print companies.”

Now that we know what brought you into the field, what brought you to Prisma?

“I previously worked for WD and they unfortunately closed. The manager of WD recommended me to Tom Belanger and I received a call from the HR department at Prisma. Tom voiced the implementation of a new Grand Format sector at Prisma and wanted me to be part of the team because of my experience. I reluctantly accepted and started the very next Monday. I can remember fixing part of the digital printer on my first day.”

What would you like to be doing in 10 years?

“Keep learning and honing my skills in print and continue to grow at Prisma. I do occasionally think about what it would be like working with the nice large machinery next door.”

Tell us about some of your interests/hobbies outside of Prisma? What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“Well as I stated before I like art, specifically air brushing images of nature. I had once produced art in Scottsdale on a full time basis. Something most people don’t know is my love for exotic birds and the six that I own. My most prized bird is probably my Blue and Gold Macaw (movie Rio) named AA. My other two favorite birds are the Scarlet Macaw and African Gray. The African Gray rules the house and knows how to talk; he once tore a 6 ft long hole across my wall!”

What or who inspires you?

“I follow the saying, ‘Never say no.’ No matter a situation’s difficulty, try it and don’t give up. Learn from your failures and most importantly always put in the extra effort.”

Favorite vacation spot?

“JJ’s in Rocky Point, Mexico. I would regularly venture down south to Rocky Point so I could enjoy a relaxing vacation and eventful night. There is also great fishing if you pick the right spots. It’s nice seeing the occasional shark or two in the water.
